The mouth plays an important role in our overall health. It is therefore necessary to maintain good oral hygiene by acquiring, from an early age, an adequate behavior.
The term "oral hygiene" generally refers to the care of our teeth. However, we should use the term "oral health" because it includes more notions such as periodontal diseases (gums), bad breath, maintenance of dentures, etc. To keep a healthy mouth, it is vital to eat a balanced diet and avoid snacking between meals, as well as sugary sodas that promote the development of plaque. In addition, we must take care of our mouth by cleaning at least twice a day. To combat it, certain instruments are indispensable: ToothbrushBrushing teeth after each meal helps to fight effectively against plaque. It is important to acquire from the youngest age a good technique. We advise you to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, made of nylon, and to change it as soon as the head seems crushed. The use of an electric toothbrush can also be recommended: it achieves very easily the same results as with a manual toothbrush. It is then the movement of the rotating head that eliminates plaque. Moreover it is easy to use by children. ToothpasteWhether gel or paste toothpaste is an important part of brushing. The range of toothpastes available in pharmacy and supermarket is very extensive. Each toothpaste has its specificity. It can contain various active ingredients (antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, fluorine, calcium, etc.) that give it different properties for each particular case. The mouthwashAfter brushing, the mouthwash is a key gesture. Rinsing teeth (for about 30 seconds) actively contributes to the removal of plaque and cleans gums, tongue and mucous membranes. Mouthwashes contain disinfectants at a low concentration but sufficient for the disinfection of the oral cavity. We will advise you on the choice of product to use. The dental jet (or water jet)The dental jet is a device that projects high pressure water into the interdental spaces. It does not replace the toothbrush but eliminates food debris and activates the circulation of blood by a massage effect. The interdental brush and dental floss An interdental brush makes it possible to reach the interstices between each tooth. If the space between the teeth is sufficient, this instrument can be used in addition to the toothbrush. Its use is particularly recommended during the wearing of an orthodontic appliance or in cases of periodontitis. It is also possible to complete the brushing by the use of dental floss which cleans the lateral faces of the teeth. Chewing gumIf you cannot brush your teeth, sugar-free chewing gum can help reduce the risk of tooth decay. Indeed, the chewing of a chewing gum makes it possible to salivate abundantly. The influx of saliva causes a decrease in oral acidity and therefore reduces the risk of attack of enamel. This solution does not replace a brushing of teeth. Descaling and polishing If it is not regularly removed on the surface of the teeth, the bacterial plaque can become tartar by combination with minerals contained in saliva (phosphates and calcium). This is a hard, rough deposit that adheres strongly to the tooth surfaces. These characteristics favor the development on the surface of dental plaque, which explains that once formed, the deposit of scale can only increase. Irritant and rich in germs, it promotes the development of gingival and periodontal diseases. Scaling is the removal of this hard deposit (either by "scraping" or by using ultrasonic equipment) and polishing the surfaces thus cleaned. The aim is to restore the teeth to their normal aesthetic appearance, recreate a healthy environment for the teeth and periodontium, and facilitate the control of oral hygiene. The frequency of descaling depends on the quantity and speed at which scale is formed. It is related to the elimination of bacterial plaque (brushing, dental floss ...). Your dentist will define your need based on these assessment criteria. Our advices:• After each meal brush your teeth, and if this is not possible, chew a sugar-free chewing gum. • Carefully choose your toothbrush and change it every 3 months. • A descaling procedure for your practitioner is necessary once a year. • Do not wait for pain to see your dentist. What is a dental implant?Dental implant: artificial root in the form of a titanium screw placed in the jaw bone, serving as a support for a crown, a bridge or a removable prosthesis. Our advices:• The implant is a solution of choice because it allows to replace one or more teeth without affecting other teeth, and offers a prosthesis both fixed and comfortable. • Implants have a life span of several decades. • If you are concerned, you must, like all implant holders, observe extremely strict dental hygiene and carry out checks very regularly.
